MORE ABOUT PHYALITY

History and developments

The band that is nowadays called Phyality was started in september 1998 by Jolanda, Phil and Dagmar. In the beginning it went under the name Coppessnellers, as all 3 members of that time were living in a house that belonged to the Robert Coppes foundation, an organization that helps blind and partly sighted people on living on their own and learning what is neccesary for that. In the early stages Jolanda was the keyboard player, Phil played acordeon and Dagmar was singing. They performed some Dutch songs, some of them written by Jolanda. And Phil brought the folk music into the band. After a very short time the name was changed to Vughtenaertjes, as all members were living in the village called Vught. In january or february of 1999 Roy joined the band as a singer, but he was only there for 2 months, then he left temporarily to go somewhere else for a training in living on his own. In may 1999 Monique was joining one repetition as she was visiting friends in Vught, so she was just there as the members were deciding on new songs that they could maybe do. As she really liked the idea, after some thinking and discussing she decided to join even though she was living in Deventer, quite far away from Vught and she also couldn't be with every repetition as she was still studying in Deventer. Then in june Roy came back to the group. In June the group also started saving money, every month all members put a few guilders together to pay for the drinks during repetitions and to save money for the future. Then in july Joop joined the Vughtenaertjes. His idea was to sing in the band and to play base. In august of that year the group was asked to do a performance in october that would take 3 quarters of an hour, so the group started thinking of songs to do and practicing these songs. Marielle, an old friend of Dagmar, who had heard of the new group, thought it would also be a good idea to maybe join, and in her first repetition that she did in september was decided that she would be a great addition with her many years experience in playing keyboards, writing songs, singing and much more. On October 1st Marielle did a second repetition with the band which was also the last preparing repetition for the performance on the second of october. Although the Vughtenaertjes had 7 members in october, on this performance Joop was missing for personal reasons, so there was Monique, Dagmar and Roy singing, Phil playing acordeon and Marielle and Jolanda on keyboards. The performance on that day did not really go so well, it is more like a funny memory... 2 Weeks after this performance Jolanda decided to leave the group and one week after that Roy also left again, temporarily. So then during the period november 1999 until April 2000, there were 5 members in the group and even though the band practiced often, nothing seemed to work. Then in April Joop left the group and Roy came back. After that time some stability grew and for several years no members left or joined the group.

In may 2000 one of Marielle's doggies called Molly ran away and was lost for one day. When she was found back, Marielle speculated where the dog had been and which path she must have followed to end up in the place where she was found back. During one creative repetition that followed that month, Marielle, Roy, Dagmar and Phil took an old Dutch song from the 60's called Bello (Niet Zo Trekken) and wrote new lyrics for it, telling Molly's story. And they called it Molly (Niet Zo Rennen) which means Molly (Don't run so fast). It tells how she ran off, that she passed a big busy road, how she followed her way to the chinese restaurant and how she finally ended up in a garden of some friendly people who recognized the sign that she was wearing and then called Marielle to get her back.

In June the band did another performance that lasted half an hour. Most of the songs that were played that time were new songs, including Molly (Niet Zo Rennen).

The band had started with Dutch songs and folk music, but with the joining of Marielle, Monique and Roy and with the leaving of Jolanda and Joop all was slowly changing and there was more and more pop music coming into the group. The name Vughtenaertjes just didn't fit anymore (Vughtenaertjes are some sort of cakes being made in Vught)... So it was time for changing the name of the band into what it is still: Phyality. The word Phyality doesn't mean a thing, it came out of a funny misunderstanding of the words "fighting the sea"that are in one song that the band is doing. All members had many long talks about if the name should be changed or not and what it should become, but finally in the beginning of 2001 the decision was made. In January 2001 the band also started putting the saved money in a new bank account. There was a long time that Phyality didn't do any performances on stage. The last performance the band did under the name Vughtenaertjes was in june 2000. So with the new name the band took much time to practice, learn new songs and in july Marielle started writing a song for the band. The idea came up when she was visiting Monique In Deventer, together with her 4 doggies Muppy, Molly, Jessy and Fanny (Jessy's daughter). In the beginning it was not much more than chords and bits of a melody. On july 30th Marielle's youngest doggy Fanny died by accident, and this was Marielle's inspiration to complete the song and call it "That's life" It is a very emotional song that describes how Marielle felt after the passing of little Fanny, who only got 3 months old. It still took 2 months before the song was completed and the backing vocals were written and all other members helped in perfecting the lyrics of the song. It is still the only self-written song that has really been completed.

In september everyone felt it was time to have a performance once again. Monique, who at that time had a voluntary job for a youth committee for blind and partly sighted people, thought it would be a useful idea to combine the wish to have a performance with Phyality with organizing live back-ground music for a new-years party of this youth committee. And then the practicing and thinking of many more new songs began, as the Youth committee asked Phyality to play more than 2 hours. And then suddenly in December Roy got a request of a friend for Phyality to play on a birthday party the same month. So suddenly it was getting really busy. The performance in december was great. Not that all went well, but the audience liked it and reacted spontaneously and it was one big party. So we hoped all the best for the new years party in January... Especially because one friend promised to make recordings of this big performance and put it on cd's. But the New years performance of 2002 was a big disaster. Marielle had a bad cold, and Dagmar, Phil and Monique were just recovering from a cold. The sound installation that was used was bad, and no one could hear Marielle's keyboard well, and no one could hear each other... The recordings still exist, and everyone learned from them how it should not be done...

2002 was a great year, .. As on february 20th 2002 Dagmar and Phil Married and there was a big party and just for fun Phyality did 2 songs on the wedding party. In March 2002 Phyality got their first email address: phyality@hotmail.com In April 2002 Dagmar and Phil left the Robert Coppes foundation where they had been living several years, and moved into their new home. During the 2 months when Dagmar and Phil were moving there were no band activities. After that the band left the old repetition room at the Robert Coppes Foundation and started practicing in the living room of Dagmar and Phil's new home.

In july 2002 Marielle created the Phyality sign that is used on letters and such.

Then for several months things were quiet again, but there was another new years party in view. An acquaintance of Monique heard about the band and invited them to do back-ground music on the 4th of january, a performance which should have been great and lasted 3 hours, but in the end the sound system was not arranged and the band had to improvise and they did only 15 songs.

In february 2003, after a long time of doubts, Roy decided to leave the group for good, leaving Marielle, Dagmar, Phil and Monique as the final members.

The year 2003 was a very hard one, where every member had to deal with private difficulties, so there came an end to weekly repetitions. In february Phyality made a plan to give a big celebration party in september, on the 5th aniversary of the band. But what started as great plans never got finished. In the end one organization in Vught, who was organizing a day to show all creative activities Vught has to the inhabitants of the village, asked Phyality to do a half-an-hour lasting performance on september 20th in the Speeldoos Theatre, the only theatre Vught has... This was the last live performance Phyality has done so far, but it was also the best, and it was without Roy. One friend made video recordings of this performance.

On the same day Phyality celebrated the 5th aniversary with a small group of close friends and relatives.

In august the decision was made to make t-shirts of the band for each member to wear on stage, with the sign on it. The plan was to wear them during the performance in the Speeldoos Theatre, but the shirts were not ready in time, they finally came in november 2003.

After that, it became awfully quiet for half a year. The first repetition that followed the performance, was on march 20th 2004...

After that, every once in a while there is suddenly a repetition, mostly spontaneously starting... In november 2004, Marielle's old keyboard that she has been using so far, stopped working, as it is a very old one. In january 2005 Marielle found a new keyboard. It was paid by all 4 members of Phyality, and with a big part of the money Phyality has been saving since 1999... So saving money really helped in the end, and the money that was earned from a few performances on new years parties that went awfully bad, also really helped.

In April 2005 the members decided to take one old orchestra tape that Marielle once made with her old keyboard and do singing repetitions to the songs that were on it. The idea was suggested to make digital recordings of this singing excersize and add some instrumental songs that are still waiting to get lyrics. Then it would be possible to put it on cd's, so there would finally be demo cd's that can be given to friends who are interested.

And no one could have expected the results to be like this... Ok, these are no professional studio recordings, just home recordings, made in Dagmar and Phil's living room... Including background sounds like clocks and snoring doggies...Lol... But so far they are the best recordings of Phyality that exist...

.............And so here they are......... And while Phil is now doing something on his computer, Marielle is listening to True love and making the covers of the demo cd's ready... Dagmar is in the other room listening to old recordings on tape of the new years performance of january 2003... And I... I'm writing this here...... I hope you enjoyed reading!!!

That's Life

Arranged by: Marielle, Lyrics by: Marielle, Monique, Dagmar, Phil, roy,

Hmmm-mmm, Yeah-heah

Another day While the morning sun is rising high Clear blue sky What else that I can say Waking up With an awful feeling in my head So sad Oh poorly Pup She's dead Hmmm

Little friend Always wagging, glad and felt so good Begged for food So happy till the end I don't know Why you left me, now we're torn apart My heart It's hurting me so We've been torn apart

Yeah, I know that's life But still I don't know how it could be Oh, I feel that's life But always in my heart you're with me, yeah Oh, yeah, that's life It's a pity that it happened this way But one day It will be okay Till that next life

Oh, it's right If I tell you that we all miss you So your mummy too From the morning till the night When I sleep Many dreams are running through my brain Much pain This hurt is so deep I'm going insane Hmmm

I hope still There is one day you will come to me And walking free Together over the hills And make fun Then we fall asleep till the next day comes here No fear No more to run And no more tears

All these times that we've spend together Those times will never come back in our lives But every time you're in my dreams I say to you I love you forever Yeah-heah From the time that you were on this world Your twinkling eyes were always shining so bright But now you are a twinkling star somewhere on the other side

Yeah, I know that's life But still I don't know how it could be Oh, I feel that's life But always in my heart you're with me, yeah Oh, yeah, that's life It's a pity that it happened this way But one day It will be okay Till that next life

Till my end You will always be a piece of my mind 'Cause all times so kind You were everybody's friend

Oh, I feel That I'm guilty 'bout the fact you're gone You're gone But it seems so unreal Life goes on and on

Yeah, I know that's life But still I don't know how it could be Oh, I feel that's life But always in my heart you're with me, yeah Oh, yeah, that's life It's a pity that it happened this way But one day It will be okay Till that next life

Yeah, I know that's life But still I don't know how it could be Oh, I feel that's life But always in my heart you're with me, yeah Oh, yeah, that's life It's a pity that it happened this way But one day It will be okay Till that next life

'Cause I know where you are That little twinkling star This star is shining bright from the other side ... (Many times until the music fades away)
